A Longman direction that directs the jury to scrutinise the complainant's evidence with special care and take account of delay, but does not convey in unmistakable and firm terms the danger of convicting on uncorroborated evidence after significant delay, is inadequate and constitutes a comment rather than the required warning. The direction must link the delay with the real danger of a miscarriage of justice arising from convicting on the complainant's evidence alone. However, the direction need not include a detailed review of all matters bearing on the complainant's credibility or exhaustively identify every aspect of forensic disadvantage.
