A total effective sentence of 8 years 6 months' imprisonment for five counts of sexual offending against a child aged 12-14 who was under the offender's care, supervision and authority, where the offending was representative of a wider course of conduct, does not infringe the first limb of the totality principle. The limits of guidance afforded by comparable cases are flexible rather than rigid, and a sentence outside the range of comparable cases does not necessarily establish that the sentencing discretion miscarried.
