Where a psychiatric report attributes 'some contribution' of a mental disorder to offending, the equivocation relates to the level of contribution, not the existence of the link, and the sentencing judge errs in finding no link at all. The moderation of sentence for Verdins principles 1 and 3 must reflect the limited extent of the contribution identified. Where the offender's psychotic symptoms have substantially subsided in custody, Verdins principle 5 (imprisonment weighing more heavily) is unlikely to be engaged.
