An offender aged 23 at the time of sentencing is not a 'young offender' within the meaning of s 3 of the Sentencing Act 1991 (Vic) and the sentencing judge is not required to apply youthful offender principles. Where offending involves prolonged domestic violence with multiple aggravating features, a total effective sentence of 8 years' imprisonment is within the available range and reflects the importance of general deterrence.
