Where a sentencing judge's individual sentences, announced overall effective sentence, and sentencing remarks are irreconcilable and cannot be corrected as discrete mathematical errors, the sentences must be set aside and the offender re-sentenced. On re-sentencing, a terminal illness diagnosis with very short life expectancy (weeks to months) can substantially diminish the relevance of general deterrence, denunciation, and specific deterrence, such that the purpose of punishment may be regarded as already served by time in custody to date. However, a short life expectancy does not entitle the court to disregard the seriousness of the offending conduct.
