Evidence that an accused sought to modify a weapon before a robbery in which a modified weapon was used is part of the surrounding circumstances (a strand in a cable) rather than an indispensable intermediate fact (a link in a chain) requiring a Shepherd direction. The failure to seek a direction on statements against interest at trial will not ground an appeal where there was an objective forensic reason for not seeking the direction and the statements were unchallenged.
