Where an expert witness disclaims expertise in a field necessary to support an intermediate inference (here, the movement of blood and biological material), the expert's opinion relying on that inference lacks probative value, and a trial judge is not required to address it before accepting competing lay evidence. The proviso under s 353(1) of the Criminal Law Consolidation Act 1935 (SA) may be applied where eyewitness evidence is overwhelming notwithstanding inadequate reasons on a particular point.
