There is no established sentencing range of 8-10 years imprisonment for manslaughter of an infant child; head sentences exceeding 10 years are available in appropriate cases. Deliberate abandonment of a vulnerable child resulting in death can constitute an extremely serious case of criminal negligence warranting a sentence in excess of 10 years, even in the absence of physical violence. A sentencing judge is not required to nominate a specific discount for a plea of guilty, as sentencing is not an exercise in addition and subtraction.
