A worker who lifts a heavy object in the course of employment, in the manner the worker and others have done many times before without complaint from the employer, is not guilty of contributory negligence merely because the worker failed to weigh the object, seek assistance, or wait for help. Such failures amount to mere inadvertence, inattention or misjudgement. A general manual handling document containing a 'rough rule of thumb' about weight limits does not constitute a direction or system of work prohibiting the worker from lifting without assistance.
