An offender's inability to fit into mainstream society upon release from custody is mitigating to the extent it is attributable to childhood deprivation and abuse, but alleged 'institutionalisation' consequent upon repeated imprisonment is not, of itself, a mitigating factor. The absence of directly comparable cases does not preclude the court from determining whether a total effective sentence infringes the first limb of the totality principle.
