The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on family circumstances, including increased childcare demands where a spouse has health difficulties, can constitute or contribute to exceptional circumstances for bail pending appeal under s 9E of the Bail Act 1992 (ACT). A guilty plea does not necessarily preclude an appeal against conviction where the plea was entered following adverse voir dire rulings that allegedly denied the accused the opportunity to run defences.
