The Ankar principle that ambiguity in a guarantee should be resolved in favour of the surety applies only after all other aids to construction have been exhausted and the ambiguity remains. Where a person is named as a party to a loan agreement for no purpose other than as guarantor, signing in a single signature block described as 'director' does not prevent the signature from also binding the person as guarantor. A premature demand for repayment does not discharge a guarantee where the borrower takes no action in response to the demand.
