An unsatisfactory explanation for a delay of approximately four years in seeking leave to appeal against sentence requires proposed grounds of appeal that are compelling. Where the offending is of an exceedingly high level and the sentence could not be reduced even if all proposed grounds were made out, an extension of time will be refused. An increased sentence after re-trial is justified where the original sentence was manifestly inadequate and the factual findings at the re-trial were significantly different.
