Where a young offender commits extremely serious violent offences involving reckless endangerment of life and causing catastrophic injuries, the sentencing objectives of denunciation, general deterrence and community protection may predominate over rehabilitation, and an aggregate sentence of 5 years' imprisonment with a 3-year non-parole period for an 18-year-old offender is within range. Prior violent offending committed as a juvenile, even if dealt with in the Children's Court, remains relevant to sentencing and cannot be diminished by reference to the jurisdiction in which it was dealt with.
