Where a youthful offender commits crimes of wanton and unprovoked viciousness, including deliberate use of a firearm causing injury, the sentencing considerations of general deterrence, specific deterrence, just punishment and public denunciation will be dominant, and youth and rehabilitation must take a 'back seat'. A sentence of three years' imprisonment for intentionally causing injury by shooting a person in the thigh with a sawn-off rifle, and a total effective sentence of five years and 10 months for a course of violent and dishonest offending, were within range for a 21-year-old offender with a dysfunctional upbringing.
