Evidence of forgiveness by a victim of family violence should be treated with extreme caution in sentencing, consistently with R v Hester, and may properly be confined in its relevance to the offender's prospects of rehabilitation rather than being applied to the principle of mercy. A victim's full physical recovery from potentially life-threatening injuries does not negate the characterisation of the offending as a serious example of the offence of intentionally causing serious injury.
