In a judge-alone criminal trial, a judge's reasons must disclose with clarity how the evidence informed the ultimate conclusions as to guilt; bald statements of ultimate conclusions without appropriate analysis are inadequate, even where the evidence largely 'speaks for itself' through video footage. Where inadequate reasons occasion a substantial miscarriage of justice because conviction was not inevitable, the Court of Appeal may substitute a verdict for a lesser included offence rather than order a retrial.
