The overall total effective sentence of 14 years' imprisonment for 25 sexual offences against five child victims (spanning from the early 1980s to 2017) was upheld as consistent with the totality principle. An offender aged 57 at sentencing who would be 68 upon release is not of sufficiently advanced age to engage the second limb of the totality principle (crushing sentence). Delay between offending and sentencing is not by itself mitigatory and will only attract a significant discount where there has been real progress towards rehabilitation.
