A sentencing judge imposing a cumulative sentence must expressly consider the totality principle and the total criminality of all offending, including lesser proximate offences, to ensure the aggregate sentence appropriately reflects the overall criminality. Failure to do so may render the sentence manifestly excessive. For attempted murder involving a vicious weapon attack to vulnerable parts of the head causing life-threatening injuries, the appropriate sentencing range is 13 to 17 years' imprisonment.
