A combination of ordinary mitigating factors (youth, guilty plea, remorse, compliance with bail, rehabilitation, family support) does not necessarily amount to exceptional circumstances under s 32(2C) of the Sentencing Act 1991 enabling a Youth Justice Centre Order for a Category A serious youth offence. General deterrence remains an important sentencing consideration for serious knife violence by young offenders, even where the offender was a child at the time of offending. An offender's youth and rehabilitation prospects are of less significance in cases of serious violence.
