The availability of a combination sentence (imprisonment plus CCO) as an alternative within the permissible range does not mean that a sentence of imprisonment alone breaches the parsimony principle. A sentence of 3 years' imprisonment (20% of the 15-year maximum) with an 18-month non-parole period for recklessly causing serious injury involving multiple facial fractures from a weapon attack was held to be moderate and not manifestly excessive, notwithstanding the offender's youth (22-23), early guilty plea, and good rehabilitation prospects.
