A judge exercising discretion to refuse a late amendment to pleadings does not commit material error by giving substantial weight to judicial availability, by not inquiring into the availability of other judges, or by assessing the risk of prejudice to defendants from allegations about unidentified conduct occurring many years earlier. A change of solicitor does not constitute a satisfactory explanation for delay in seeking substantial amendments to pleadings.
