A non-parole period of 80 per cent of the head sentence (24 years of 30 years) for two counts of murder by an offender aged 74 with serious ill-health and Paranoid Personality Disorder was held not manifestly excessive. The advanced age and ill-health of an offender, even where the offender is likely to die in custody, cannot override the sentencing purposes of just punishment, denunciation and deterrence for offending of this gravity.
