A sentencing judge's rejection of an offender's remorse must be supported by evidence in the sentencing materials; a finding that remorse amounts to self-pity rather than genuine contrition requires an identifiable evidential basis, but even where such a finding is arguably erroneous, leave to appeal will be refused if the sentence is otherwise appropriate to the gravity of the offending.
