The Court imposed an aggregate sentence of 5 years and 3 months' imprisonment (after 25% early plea discount from a pre-discount sentence of 7 years) for nine domestic violence-related offences including two counts of intentional choking (one against a 7-year-old child), common assaults, ADVO contraventions, and influencing a witness. The Court rejected the offender's expressions of remorse as self-serving, finding no genuine insight based on the Sentencing Assessment Report which recorded denial, minimisation and blame-shifting, and assessed prospects of rehabilitation as guarded and reoffending risk as high. The Court gave the offender the benefit of the doubt on Bugmy principles regarding a difficult childhood in Iran including exposure to violence and sexual assault, while noting the link between deprivation and offending was difficult to identify and that such a link may cut both ways by increasing the need for community protection.
