The Supreme Court dismissed an application to transfer a nervous shock/pure mental harm claim arising from a death in custody from the District Court to the Supreme Court. On the psychiatric evidence, the Court found no real chance that damages for either plaintiff would approach or exceed the District Court's $1.25 million jurisdictional limit, given pre-existing conditions, long absence from the workforce, and other significant contributors to the plaintiffs' mental health unrelated to the alleged wrongdoing. The Court also rejected arguments based on public interest, dissatisfaction with the District Court, and the desire for a broader inquiry as constituting 'other sufficient reason' under s 140(3)(b)(ii).
