A general release clause in a deed of settlement, using broad language such as 'in respect of any matter whatsoever', will be confined to claims existing at the date of the deed and will not extend to future claims arising under continuing contractual arrangements, unless the text and recitals clearly manifest an intention to release future liabilities.
