The Court of Appeal refused leave to appeal against a total effective sentence of 3 years and 3 months' imprisonment (non-parole period of 1 year and 10 months) for intentionally causing injury by knife attack on a stranger, trafficking in methylamphetamine (75 grams pure), and related drug and proceeds of crime offences. The Court held that the sentences, cumulation, and non-parole period were within the range reasonably open to the sentencing judge, notwithstanding arguments that insufficient weight was given to the plea of guilty on the trafficking charge, rehabilitative steps on bail, and hardship from missing the birth of the applicant's first child. The absence of an express reference to the totality principle in the sentencing reasons was not determinative where the total effective sentence was objectively 'just and appropriate'.
