A sentencing judge must give proper weight to evidence of genuine rehabilitation even where the offender initially entered a rehabilitation programme to avoid imprisonment; the offender's state of mind on entry does not determine the weight to be given to subsequent genuine rehabilitative progress. For clandestine amphetamine manufacturing operations yielding quantities in the range of 60-730 grams, sentences of six years' imprisonment are exceptional. Prior convictions, however numerous, cannot justify a sentence disproportionate to the gravity of the offence for which sentence is being passed.
