A total effective sentence of six years nine months with a four year three month non-parole period for trafficking in a commercial quantity of methyl-amphetamine (616.5 grams pure) together with ecstasy, LSD and cocaine is within the appropriate range. Comparative sentencing exercises by reference to individual cases remain almost invariably misconceived except where parity between co-offenders is in issue. General judicial observations about untaxed profits and corruption risks associated with large-scale drug trafficking are permissible sentencing remarks and do not constitute impermissible consideration of extraneous matters.
