For dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, sentences exceeding six years' imprisonment are reserved for cases involving a substantial criminal history including prior dangerous driving and/or multiple drink-driving offences, or deliberate aggressive driving. A sentence of eight years was manifestly excessive where the offender had no significant criminal history despite extreme intoxication, prolonged dangerous driving over eight kilometres, and rejection of two explicit warnings.
