A manslaughter arising from a prolonged violent response to a single punch, where the attack continued after the victim was helpless on the ground, warrants a sentence in the range of seven years imprisonment. Intoxication at the time of the offence does not mitigate the penalty. The case was assessed as slightly less serious than R v Bojovic [1999] QCA 206 (eight years on appeal).
