A sentence of six years detention for a 15-year-old first-time detainee convicted of grievous bodily harm (gratuitous kicking attack causing serious facial fractures) was manifestly excessive; four and a half years detention with 50 per cent release was substituted. The Court signalled that the current sentencing range for gratuitous violence by juveniles may be too low and that higher sentences may be appropriate in future cases.
