A combination of individually prescribed units of measurement (e.g., micrograms, cubic metres, degrees Celsius, kilopascals) is only an 'Australian legal unit of measurement' under the National Measurement Act 1960 (Cth) if the particular combination is itself prescribed in the regulations for the particular physical quantity being measured. Where no Australian legal unit of measurement exists for the quantity being measured, s 10 does not apply and the common law rules regarding admissibility of scientific instrument readings govern. The accuracy of a scientific instrument not in the 'notoriously accurate' class may be proved by evidence other than certification under s 10.
