In Tasmania, evidence of a speedometer reading is prima facie evidence of speed without the need for evidence that the speedometer's accuracy has been tested. The common law presumption of accuracy of scientific instruments applies to speedometers and is consistent with the Evidence Act 2001 (Tas). The National Measurement Act 1960 (Cth) does not preclude acceptance of speedometer evidence; it only operates when the accuracy of the instrument is specifically challenged.
