A 27-year-old offender cannot be treated as analogous to a young person for sentencing purposes absent evidence of mental deficiency or retardation; mere immaturity is insufficient. A sentencing judge who considers and rejects periodic detention must explain, at least briefly, why that option was inappropriate. A recognisance for armed robbery of a taxi driver is manifestly inadequate having regard to the guideline judgment in R v Henry.
