For grievous bodily harm with intent involving a knife attack causing serious but non-fatal injuries, where the offender is elderly with dated criminal history, the appropriate sentencing range is six to eight years imprisonment. A serious violent offence declaration under s 161B(3) is not necessarily warranted at the lower end of this range, particularly where the danger of repetition is remote.
