A short period of actual imprisonment imposed solely as a 'short sharp lesson' on a youthful first offender may be manifestly excessive where the potential harms of imprisonment (exposure to hardened criminals, drugs, risk of injury or degrading conduct) outweigh any deterrent benefit, and an intensive correction order may better serve the competing sentencing purposes of punishment, deterrence and rehabilitation. The sentencing range for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm by a young first offender whose driving involved inattention rather than deliberate recklessness extends from wholly suspended sentences through intensive correction orders.
