A Longman warning must identify the particular features of the evidence that might affect the reliability of the complainant's testimony, including specific inconsistencies and the potential effect of counselling, therapy or hypnosis on the complainant's recollection. A general reference to inconsistencies without specifying them is insufficient. Where a complainant has undergone therapy that may have involved hypnosis or recovered memories, the trial judge must address this issue in the warning even if the complainant denies that the memories are 'repressed'. The offence of unlawful carnal knowledge at common law is complete upon penetration of the labia of the pudendum, not the vaginal canal.
