For a single act of digital penetration of a young child by an adult, the normal sentencing range is 18 months to 3½ years' imprisonment. A starting point of 6 years per count is substantially too high. Only in rare and exceptional circumstances will such an offence not result in an immediate custodial sentence. An offender's own history of childhood sexual abuse has little mitigating effect other than in a most exceptional case.
