A sentence of 14 years' imprisonment for attempted murder is not manifestly excessive where the offender is a mature-aged person with an extensive criminal history of violent offences, the attack on an elderly, wheelchair-bound victim in her home was premeditated and involved a weapon, and there are no mitigating factors such as a guilty plea or remorse. The sentence in R v Byers of 12 years for premeditated attempted murder by shooting appeared to be at the lower end of the appropriate range.
