A Zoneff direction is not required where lies by the accused go only to credit and not to consciousness of guilt, particularly where experienced defence counsel did not seek such a direction and there was no risk the jury would use the lies impermissibly. A trial judge directing the jury on the right to silence need not use any particular form of words; it is sufficient to direct the jury as to the nature of the right and that no adverse inference may be drawn from its exercise.
