In sexual offence trials involving substantial delay in complaint and absence of corroboration, the trial judge must use the specific words 'dangerous to convict' in the Longman direction. Otherwise extensive and adequate warnings about the effects of delay are insufficient without those precise words. The six propositions articulated by Sully J in R v BWT as to the required content of a Longman direction are endorsed as correct.
