A sentence cannot be adjusted downwards to allow it to be served in a non-custodial environment. Kidnapping is one of the most serious offences in the criminal calendar and calls for general deterrence to prevail over subjective circumstances. Untested self-serving statements to psychologists are an inadequate basis for findings that minimise objective criminality.
