In cases involving serious sexual assault resulting in death, general deterrence should not be given lesser emphasis merely because the offences were not premeditated, even where the offender is young. Partial accumulation of sentences does not of itself constitute double punishment contrary to Pearce v The Queen where the overlap between offences is relatively small. Sentencing statistics for manslaughter are of limited utility given the wide range of factual circumstances the offence covers.
