R v Thomson and Houlton (2000) 49 NSWLR 383 does not mandate any particular discount for a plea of guilty; a 20% discount may be appropriate even where the plea was entered at the first available opportunity, depending on the circumstances. Self-serving statements made by an offender to a psychologist about gambling addiction and future intentions warrant little weight where the offender did not give evidence and has a history of continued offending despite prior leniency. Offending while subject to good behaviour bonds and serving home detention is a matter of significant aggravation.
