The appropriate sentencing range for grievous bodily harm offences in Queensland, as identified in Amituanai, has a mean average of approximately two and a half years imprisonment with parole eligibility after about 12 months. A sentence of three and a half years with no recommendation for early release was manifestly excessive for a 19-year-old first offender of violence who pleaded guilty early and cooperated with police, notwithstanding the serious nature of the offence (cowardly attack from behind with a weapon causing permanent loss of vision in one eye). The sentence in R v Wright (five years) may be out of line with the general range.
