The Queensland Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal against conviction for rape, holding that the verdict was not unsafe or unsatisfactory despite complaints about impermissible questions regarding the complainant's motive, prejudicial drug-use evidence in the Record of Interview, and defence counsel's failure to cross-examine a particular witness. The Court also held that the trial judge's concluding remarks accompanying a Black direction did not impermissibly pressure the jury. On sentence, the Court refused leave to appeal, finding that 7½ years' imprisonment for the knife-threatened rape of a virgin complainant was not manifestly excessive, having regard to comparable sentences in R v Edwards, R v Stirling, and R v Basic.
