The incarceration of both parents of a healthy child of seven, where grandparents are providing care albeit with difficulty, does not of itself constitute exceptional circumstances warranting departure from an otherwise appropriate custodial sentence. Post-sentence evidence of a child's grief reaction and carer difficulties is admissible on appeal to show the true significance of facts existing at sentencing, but must meet the 'exceptional circumstances' threshold established in Wirth and the subsequent authorities.
