The strength of the Crown case is irrelevant to the quantum of the utilitarian discount for a guilty plea; the discount reflects the saving to the community of the cost of a trial, not the likelihood of conviction. Where discounts for guilty plea and assistance to authorities are both applicable, the combined discount should be assessed holistically and may exceed the mathematical product of the two individual discounts applied sequentially.
